Top 10: Smells

I’m a simple guy; some may say that I’m simpleton.  I have simple tastes, or should I say simple smells.   Some of these smells are time-machines, since the olfactory bulb is directly connected to memories somehow. As always, I use Thursdays as a way that you can get to know me a little better, and so today you get to find out what kind of smells I like. I don’t know how this will help you in any way, but here you go:

10. New Car Smell
There is something about buying a new car, isn’t there?  I haven’t done it often; in fact, I have never done it.  But my parents bought me one when I turned 16.  I didn’t appreciate the smell then like  I do now. Nor did I appreciate the car like I ought.  Still though: that new car smell–clean, fresh, crisp.

9. Old Spice Aftershave
Maybe I’m being nostalgic. My dad used to wear this, and so smelling it, I think of him. Here’s the thing: Old Spice cologne does not smell anything like the aftershave to me.

8. Fire
There’s nothing like sitting around a fire with friends, toasting marshmallows and talking about old times.  The smell of fire brings with it a sense of romance, danger, and roughing-it.  When you leave the fire-pit you still get to carry that smell with you as it has infiltrated your entire body and clothes.

7. Apple Pie Baking in the Oven
Imagine walking in the house from a crisp, cool autumn day and suddenly the sweet, pie-50407_1920cinnamony smell of apple pie baking in the oven wafts into your nostrils.  It’s almost like you’ve died and gone to heaven.

6. Bread Baking in the Oven
Of course, waking up to the smell of bread baking in the oven is a wonderful experience too.  Take me to a bread factory, and you will see a very contented man.

5. Grilling Burgers
Chicken, steak, fish; these are all fine on the grill, but there is something about grilling burgers that makes me become immediately hungry with drool sliding down my chin.  Okay, maybe not the drool part, but it’s close. My salivary glands start working overtime when I walk outside and smell burgers four doors down.

4. Cigar Smoke
I’m not a smoker, but I’m not one who is quick to get away from those who are.  I might keep my distance so as to not get smoke in my lungs, but not so far that I can’t get the awesome smell of tobacco in my nose.  Gotta love it! I do like the smell of cigarette smoke too (just not the stale smell that gets in clothes, hair, and furniture).

3. Coffee
12 oz. Highlander Grogg Flavored CoffeeAfter we leave the bread factory, let’s stop off at a local coffee house and just bask in the smell of freshly ground, freshly brewed coffee.  I don’t care if its Folgers or Maxwell House when it comes to smell.  However, if you want a wonderful scent for your nose, and an amazing taste for your buds (taste-buds, not friends–you so totally want to keep this for yourself) order some Highlander Grogg from Berres Bros.

2. Alyssa Ashley Perfume
My sister wore this perfume/lotion all the time.  I always loved it since I was a little kid.  I finally asked her what its name was; I loved it so much, I wanted my wife to get some.  This is the best smelling perfume, lotion, body wash, etc. of all time! I can’t tell you how amazing it is when Katie wears it.

1. Cherry Tobacco Pipe Smoke
Here we go again, with the tobacco smell, but let’s face it: pipe tobacco is so man-984093_1920-e1536841772130.jpgunbelievable! It’s distinct smell stops everyone in tracks. A person cannot smell pipe tobacco and not say, “ooh! I smell a pipe!” There are other “flavors” of pipe tobacco of course, but cherry/cherry vanilla is the most popular that everyone loves to smell.

So what did I get wrong?  Remember Thursdays are just fun ways to get to know something different about me, but I’d love to get to know you as well.  Leave me comment and let me know your favorite smell, and where I went wrong.
